Across the nation, new developments are working to create tourist attractions that offer unique experiences. These developments are trying to re-create a sense of place that draws on a local heritage. Meanwhile, other places are building on an existing heritage and capitalizing on the concept. Today, Heritage Tourism is a growing form of entertainment.

Here's an example of a new development that has tried to re-create what Conneaut Lake Park already has in its rural, lakeside setting, sense of place, and rich heritage:

Muskoka Wharf: Constructed in Gravenhurst, Ontario this development, on the site of an old industrial complex now offers heritage facilities, shops, restaurants, a marina, a hotel and an historic steamship.

Here are is different example of an historical site that has been turned around and converted into a tourist attraction with a heritage theme:

Amish Acres: In Nappanee, Indiana, a 80-acre restored farmstead listed in the National Register of Historic Places offering tours, documentary films, family style Threshers Dinner, live Broadway musicals in, quaint shopping, and country inns to travelers interested in learning the whys and ways of the Old Order Amish.

The following is an example of another amusement park/resort that was on the brink of complete extinction but managed to turn itself around through grassroots efforts.

Arnold's Park: Built on the shores of Lake Okoboji, Iowa, in 1889, this historic amusement park, famous for its vintage roller coaster and other classic rides found itself in nearly $1.5 million dollars of debt and celebrated the ilimination of its debt in January 2007 while keeping the whole park intact.
